Bibliosmia
For reading addicts like me, the smell of books whether it’s a new one or old is so intoxicating.
A Book is a combination of chemicals used in manufacturing of paper, ink used for printing & adhesive used for binding the books. A freshly printed book is always a craving for a bibliophile.
As soon as these books become old the materials used degrade over time, and has vanilla-ish scent. The reason is wood based paper contains lignin which is related to vanillin
I always wondered is it only because of the chemicals as mentioned above the fragrance of old books is so intoxicating or is it something more.
Books take us back to memory lane and reminds us of all the wonderful moments we have experienced and automatically make us feel emotionally good.
For me personally books make me feel safe & calms me down. They remind me of my school library, childhood and moments of uninterrupted leisure time.
Finally was happy to find this word Bibliosmia which means smell and aroma of a good book.
My favourite book of this year so far has been IKIGAI and this Japanese word means “a reason for being”. I just got the book when I needed it the most.
